Whimsical (Playing Arts) by Oksal Yesilok
2016 - 2017, Golden A' Toy, Games and Hobby Products Design Award Winner
For this design, I prepared a thesis project which examines the history of the game cards, how they came out, and today's examples. During this research I have reached the meanings of the symbols. This gave me the idea of creating a new and different card deck.
This deck of 56 cards are the reinterpretation of the known playing cards symbols with a different design. Inspired by the logo of whimsical, the concept of the design is determined and supported by illustration. The simple one-color design is only simple in respect to the narrow lines, one color and hand painted edges. The backs of each card is decorated with a 3D appearing diamond texture.
Design Challenges
The most difficult part of the project was the printing phase. I had to deal with paper selection and a lot of stuff. In the first trial, 200 decks were printed incorrectly, the selected paper design did not fit. And then the new 200 decks were printed.
Production Technology
The project has been worked on Adobe Illustrator. After the design was finished, the printing phase was realized in the printing press. Matte gray, black and metallic pantone are used in the design. The cards were printed on 320 gr. Maia Paper. The packaging is embossed with logo and some design details. The edges of the cards are painted fluorescent yellow to add design difference.
