Cairo Jazz Fest (Poster) by Tarek Abdelkawi
2018 - 2019, Golden A' Graphics and Visual Communication Design Award Winner
The forms and composition of the poster were inspired by the fusion of free-forms and traditional concepts found in jazz performances, hence the combination of classical local motifs with loose, improvised patterns. The central figure is a dedication to the festival's founder, a prominent jazz pianist.
The official poster for Cairo's 10th Jazz Festival, used to promote the event in print and digital media. The poster was traditionally illustrated in pencils and ink, and digitally coloured and prepared for production.
Design Challenges
It is the festival's intention to emphasise both its local identity while opening up to the international jazz scene. The goal was to design an image that communicates this idea internationally, while still seeming interesting to its local audience who can easily regard the use of ancient Egyptian motifs and symbols as redundant.
Production Technology
Initially illustrated in pencils and ink, then digitally coloured and prepared for production.
