F1 Trophy Design (Race Winners Award) by SANJAY CHAUHAN
2018 - 2019, Golden A' Awards, Prize and Competitions Design Award Winner
Inspiration
Singapore Airlines brief was simply to design the 2014 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Trophy.
After thorough audits of past F1 Trophies, our aim was simple – Design a stunning and beautiful F1 Trophy. With over 35 sketches of various themes, the final inspiration came from the Singapore Airlines logo itself. Taking the bird graphic and bringing it life and into a 3D space. Further inspiration came from the beautifully elegant Rolls Royce's ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’.
Creativity
The F1 Trophy transforms the Singapore Airlines iconic bird graphic into a
uniquely crafted 3D sculptural work of art. Three gold stripes on each wing represent power, direction and speed while the smooth,
clean curves imbue a touch of elegance and beauty, synonymous with modern F1 cars. Seven rings on the black base pay tribute to the longevity of the world’s first F1 Night Race. The 24K gold-plated trophy, milled from solid aircraft-grade aluminIum blocks, is then lovingly hand-polished.
Design Challenges
Not often that you get a brief to design a trophy, especially one for the pinnacle of motorsport – A Formula 1 Trophy.

That in itself was a challenge. We set about producing various sketches of various themes. After many rounds we homed in on one. The next challenge was to engage a partner that could take our design and help bring it to life. Risis impressed us – they had the know-how and expertise. The next challenge was to produce it and make it look beautiful.
Production Technology
Each F1 Trophy is milled meticulously from 4 solid aircraft-grade aluminium blocks – paying homage to both Singapore Airlines and curvy modern F1 cars. The three stripes, echoing the bird logo, and the inner wings are sumptuously plated in 24K gold. The seven rings on the shiny black base pay tribute to the longevity of the world’s first F1 night race. An additional ring is added for each subsequent year. All components are then hand-assembled with the F1 plaque completing the Trophy.
